The New Federal Drug Benefit: Medicare Part D


Understanding your choices and what you must do is complicated and very important. Be assertive about seeking out the help you need.

Below are four major sources of unbiased assistance:


Illlinois Benefits is an education, screening and enrollment tool provided online by the state. This site provides a wealth of health care information, including the programs available only to Illinois residents. Check this site out first! Find it at


Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("Medicare" or "CMS") at .

The "Medicare & You 2006" handbook contains valuable information. Make sure you read it!

To obtain a list of all relevant Medicare publications, go to, click on the publications section, put the phrase "Prescription Drug" in the Search box and click the Go button.


Local Area Agency on Aging. To find the agency that serves you, call 1-800-252-8966 or go online to search by county.


SHIP, the Illinois Department of Insurance's Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program, can provide expert assistance to Medicare participants, including those under 65. The SHIP program provides trained staff and volunteer counselors statewide. Counselors provide in-person and telephone assistance about many health insurance issues, including Medicare Part D. SHIP counseling services are confidential and free.

Contact your local SHIP agency to find out about Medicare Part D educational events in your area. Call 1-800-548-9034 or go online to see the list of local volunteers.
