POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Nurse Analyst

PERMANENT ASSIGNMENT: General Law/Worker’s Compensation

LOCATION: Springfield

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with experience

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Bureau Chiefs of General Law and Worker’s Compensation, the Nurse Analyst summarizes and analyzes medical records and other pertinent healthcare and legal documents for review by an attorney. Duties include but are not limited to managing files by obtaining, reviewing, organizing and indexing all medical records and billing statements for case review; determining that all records are complete; detecting any tampering or inconsistencies within the record and setting forth a plan of proof; using technical information from such references as digests, journals, monographs, texts or practice manuals, researching and integrating healthcare and nursing library research regarding case subject areas, correlating them to the allegations in the file and preparing attorneys for depositions and/or trials advising attorneys of appropriate strategies with medical witnesses.

The Nurse Analyst independently analyzes procedural problems and recommends solutions in certain fields of nursing and medicine; educates attorneys and/or others involved in the legal process regarding medical facts and issues relevant to a case or claim, provides support during discovery, deposition, trial and other legal proceedings as a purely consulting expert.

The Nurse Analyst identifies, locates, evaluates and confers with appropriate experts in case subject areas, secures their services and identifies any conflicts of interest with the case parties; determines the level of practice needed, location, jury appeal and affiliations within the medical population, status of board certifications, eligibility, any disciplinary actions pending or in the past, or any terminations through the local State Board of Licensure or Healing Arts; contacts and confers with vendors to develop demonstrative evidence (i.e. medical charts, models, schematics, etc.), and to collect costs of healthcare services, supplies, and equipment for use at deposition and trial, recommends and selects authoritative healthcare textbooks, journal titles, and professional organization position statements, technical bulletins, client advisories, etc., for purchase for attorney’s client’s medical library; and performs background searches of opposing testifying experts.

The Nurse Analyst participates in leadership and professional organizations in a variety of legal, nursing and litigation support groups to keep current with evolving practice issues and settings within the litigation support field and acts as a liaison with treating healthcare providers to obtain necessary diagnostic specimens for testing purposes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires a BSN, RN or related medical degree with at least one year research experience and at least 3 years medical/nursing experience. Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills are required along with proficiency in medical terminology, understanding of anatomy and physiology, disease processes and common treatment modalities as used in medical/legal issues. Skills in establishing and maintaining effective work relations with members of the medical community and co-workers are required. Attendance is an essential function of this position.

Hours of Work: 8:45 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. (Monday-Friday)
