The Consumer Fraud Bureau is responsible for handling a broad spectrum of consumer protection activities. Its focus is to protect Illinois residents from fraudulent or dishonest business practices. It engages in investigations of possible fraud or deception and, when appropriate, files enforcement actions in state or federal court. Specifically, the Bureau investigates and files actions against fraudulent home repair companies, auto dealers, Internet sites, mortgage lenders, immigration consultants, and healthcare providers. The Bureau also files lawsuits on behalf of Illinois consumers and businesses victimized by fraud, deception and unfair business practices. In addition to litigation, the Bureau also drafts legislation and participates in seminars and trainings to educate the community on emerging consumer problems and issues.

Responsibilities:

An Assistant Attorney General in the Consumer Fraud bureau builds cases against alleged perpetrators of fraud. They investigate consumer complaints, draft pleadings, draft and respond to motions, manage mediations and settlements and represent the interests of the People of the State of Illinois in court.

Qualifications:

A strong candidate will have enthusiasm for and experience in complex litigation and trial work, sound judgment, excellent research and writing skills and at least 5 years of litigation experience. Candidates should note in their cover letter the number of cases tried, the number of depositions taken, and the number of substantive motions argued to a judge. A demonstrated commitment to public interest work is also considered. Candidates must be licensed by the State of Illinois at the time of application. Newly licensed attorneys will not be considered for this position.

Salary: Salaries start at $50,508
